The Guild of Private Media Managers has strongly condemned the rising cases of workplace harassment, bullying, and intimidation within Nigeria’s media industry.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the organization expressed deep concern over reports of oppressive leadership, physical and psychological abuse, and unethical workplace practices by media owners and managers.
The Guild described these behaviors as “utterly despicable, totally reprehensible, highly unacceptable, and grossly tasteless.” It warned that such toxic work environments stifle creativity, breed fear, and weaken the credibility of the media industry both locally and internationally.
The statement further noted that bullying and intimidation lead to high staff turnover, mental distress, and a decline in content quality.
To tackle these issues, the Guild announced the launch of a nationwide campaign against workplace bullying under the hashtags
#OperationSaferCreativeSpace and #ZeroToleranceforWorkplaceBullying. This initiative will include advocacy, sensitization programs, and legal action against offenders to ensure safer workplaces for media professionals.
The statement called on media organizations, regulatory bodies, and professional associations to support efforts to create ethical and respectful work environments. It also urged media professionals who have experienced or witnessed harassment to speak up and seek redress within the law, assuring them of the Guild’s full backing.
"The future of Nigeria’s media industry depends on fostering workplaces that encourage collaboration, creativity, and professional growth," the statement concluded.
The Guild reaffirmed its commitment to upholding media integrity and ensuring a safe and inclusive work environment for all media practitioners in Nigeria.
